My mom used to make what we called “Red Rice” when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite meals to eat. Over the years I have altered the original recipe quite a bit to make it a little more on the healthy side, and it still tastes great. This recipe is so easy, and your kids will love it.


1 cup brown rice

2 cups water

1 cup tomato sauce (or one 8 oz. can)

2 tablespoons dried minced onion

2 teaspoons chili powder

Salt to taste

Dash of pepper



Toss all the ingredients into a rice cooker and push the button down. If you don’t have a rice cooker, place all the ingredients in a pot, cover and simmer until rice is tender (about 45 min).


See… I told you it was easy! My kids love eating this rice with black or pinto beans.
